Events (GB) – Nomad roaming cinema, driven by Saab

How do you make a cinema pop up in the middle of…… anywhere?

——

This is the Nomad. A roaming cinema, the first of its type in Great Britain and it’s playing at locations around London and the South East. Thanks to Saab Great Britain, you can enjoy a 2-for-1 ticket offer for selected screenings.

The Nomad driven by Saab is screening a host of guilty pleasure films and cinema classics, all of which can be enjoyed at some unique and unexpected open air settings.

Watch films picked from an eclectic selection, against a backdrop of some of the UK’s well loved landmarks and buildings- from beautiful Royal Parks to dramatic castles.

Saab Great Britain partnered with the Nomad some time ago and some Saab owners and fans have already had the chance to enjoy a movie under the stars. We thought the whole concept of seeing a classic film in a unique environment suited the Saab ‘independent thinking’ ethos perfectly and it seems many who’ve had the Nomad experience feel the same:

Watching a film about King George VI at the beautiful Hampton Court Palace, couldn’t think of a more appropriate location to view the film – Tim D.

My boyfriend and I had a fantastic time, it’s the first time I’ve been to an outdoor cinema and the weather and hospitality element made it all the more special. Hope it was a big success for you guys! Thanks, Georgina

If you haven’t enjoyed the Nomad for yourself yet, there’s no need to feel left out. There are still plenty of opportunities left to have the Nomad cinema experience.

The Nomad schedule for September is packed with screenings in beautiful locations around London and Kent. A different film will be shown at each screening.

Films include Amelie, Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet, Back To The Future, Mamma Mia, Gosford Park, The Shawshank Redemption and many, many more. The locations include London’s Bushy Park, Queens Park and Fulham Palace and Scotney Castle in Kent. There’s even a screening of Pan’s Labyrinth at Brompton Cemetery – a truly novel place to enjoy a movie with your friends.

You can access all the venue/movie information for the 2-for-1 ticket offers here.

Saab Family Gathering – Suzhou, China

Here in Trollhattan (and in San Francisco, and in Minnesota), October 1st will see the Saabs United Octoberfest events happening.

Coincidentally, there will also be a significant gathering happening in China, with some attendees driving around 1,000km from Beijing to attend. China is becoming a very important market for Saab so it’s great to recognise this event and I look forward to sharing some photos from the gathering as they come in.

Suzhou is a picturesque southern city, around 60km west of Shanghai. It’s expected that there’ll be quite a few Saab fans not only from parts further north, but also from Shanghai and other areas as well.

More details about activities at the event will be released soon and I’ll be sure to help pass the word around here on Inside Saab.

Saab Club Austria – 25th Anniversary Fall Meeting

The Saab Club of Austria is celebrating its 25th birthday this year!

They have invited the Saab Club of Slovakia along for the celebrations and together, they will take in what sounds like a fantastic meet-n-drive event in the region. The event is taking place on September 10th.

From Alexander K:

We’ll meet at the Marchegg Castle close to the Austrian – Slovakian Border, later cross the border using a small ferry-boat and then have lunch together in the city of Bratislava. Later on we’ll head back to Austria and have a small Rallye (driving using a road-book at a certain av. speed). Afterwards we’ll celebrate together at a tavern.

Photos are expected, Alex 😉

If you’re in the region and want to join in, you can touch base at the Saab Club of Austria’s website. You’ll get appropriate contact details for this event at that link.

Events – Saabs United Octoberfest

It’s great to see the guys over at Saabs United organising an event to bring together Saab fans from around Europe right here at the company’s home in Trollhattan. (disclosure – I seem to recall having some connections to the site back in a former life 🙂 )

The Saabs United Octoberfest will take place on October 1st, though for many, it’ll probably turn into a long weekend of Saabiness.

The event will be centered around ANA, the big Saab dealership here in Trollhattan. ANA are one of the primary sponsors, along with Hirsch Performance (Saab’s factory authorised tuning house) and prominent aftermarket tuners, Maptun. Svenska Saab Klubben and the Saab Turbo Club of Sweden will also assist.

Activities will kick off with a few convoys leaving from Malmö, Stockholm and Örebro to attend the event. There’s chatter about similar initiatives taking place from other cities outside of Sweden.

Once attendees arrive, there will be plenty to do with most events taking place around ANA. Sponsors will offering the opportunity for attendees to try their products as well as discounts for purchase. ANA Begagnade Delar (the guys behind the parts sale at Saab Festivals) will be joining Svenska Saab Klubben in offering some of the more hard-to-find bits and pieces.

Of course, the biggest attraction is just to be here and catch up with people, see the vehicles and enjoy a good time. I’m going to be attending the event and speaking as a Saab employee, I hope a lot of my colleagues can be there as well. We get a lot of support from our ownership community and as well as experiencing that first hand, it’d be great to show our appreciation for it, too.

The event will also feature a dinner, showcasing the Saabs United Historic Rally Team as well as a few other special guests.

This event is covered on the Inside Saab events page.

Those interested in attending should also bookmark the Octoberfest event page at Saabs United and keep checking back there for updated information.

UPDATE: Swedish Car Day (Boston) postponed until Sept 4.

From Pierre at Charles River Saab:

——

The change is official.

Swedish Car Day has been rescheduled. I am announcing this earlier than previously stated. The museum needed to know today so as to arrange their staffing, and it did not look like there would be any significant news regarding the weather pattern. If anything, the forecast for 2-10” of rain in the northeast corridor preceding the hurricane made the change inevitable. Therefore:

Swedish Car Day 2011 will take place on September 4, 2011

Anyone who has already registered for Swedish Car Day and is still planning to attend doesn’t need to do anything further. If, unfortunately, you are unable to attend and you have registered, please cancel your reservation. If you have not yet registered but are planning on coming, please wait until noon on Friday by which time I will have adjusted the parameters at SCD Registration to enable sign-up on September 4.

The Saturday events, the Rally and pre-Swedish Car Day Gathering and Cookout will take place on September 3. If you were registered for the rally and plan on attending, no further action is required. If you were planning on participating but can’t please email me at pierre@crsaab.com. If you had not signed up for the Rally but want to participate on September 3, please wait until noon tomorrow and go to the same registration page as cited above and register for the September 3 date.

I know that the change will be a blessing to some, a hardship to others, but it was the only reasonable thing to do. Here’s to everyone staying safe as Irene makes her passage.

Update: Swedish Car Day (in Boston) threatened by hurricane

Yesterday I posted a reminder about Swedish Car Day, due to be held this Sunday in Boston.

Unfortunately it seems that Mother Nature might be making plans of her own……

Due to the impending hurricane which is forecast to be in New England this weekend, Swedish Car Day might be rescheduled. This would also include the Swedish Car Day Rally and Post-Rally Gathering. Participants are asked to check www.facebook.com/swedishcarday on Friday morning to see what the final decision is. If the current prediction of heavy rains and high wind holds, Swedish Car Day will move to Sunday, 4 September 2011. Additional instructions and information will be posted as well regarding those who have already registered. Questions can be sent to pierre@crsaab.com .

I’ll update you all with the final decision on the event, tomorrow.

Reminder: Swedish Car Day – this weekend!

Swedish Car Day 2011 is coming up very soon and once again, I can highly recommend the gathering for anyone within travelling distance of Boston. I wish I could be there myself.

I attended Swedish Car Day in 2010 and I can tell you it’s one of the best events I’ve had the good fortune to be at. Boston is just a brilliant city and the work that Village Auto Group put into this event is amazing. Just check out the setting, below, for starters!

When: 28 August 2011
Where: Larz Anderson Auto Museum, Brookline, Massachusetts, USA
Website: http://www.facebook.com/swedishcarday

What: Sponsored by Charles River Saab, and its sister stores Boston Volvo Village and Volvo Village of Norwell, Swedish Car Day brings together Saab and Volvo owners together every year on the lawns of the gracious Larz Anderson Auto Museum. The event will feature over two hundred cars displayed on the lawn, and we can reliably expect that two-thirds will be Saabs. There will be cars of every vintage, some pristine, some well seasoned, and a number of modified examples as well. There will be a raffle, awards for displayed cars as chosen by the attendees, a parts tent, specialty vendors, guest speakers and for the first time, live music! Don’t forget to tour the museum’s collection!

As a warm-up for Swedish Car Day, on 27 August 2011 we will see the return of the Swedish Car Day Rally. This will be a scavenger rally, and the theme will be Greater Boston Parks and Gardens. The rally will finish at Charles River Saab and we will have an early evening barbecue and gathering for all Swedish Car Day enthusiasts to catch up with old friends and get geared up for the main event.

A couple of my photos from last year (it was HOT! and the weather was pretty warm, too)

Video: Saab Performance Team "Duet"

Re-postedI put this one up on site late last week but it wasn’t really the best time for everyone to see it. So here it goes for another run!

——

Kenneth Backlund and Kent Andersson from the Saab Performance Team put on a two-man precision driving show at the recent IntSaab 2011 event, held in Finland.

Enjoy!

More pics from the 2011 SOC

It’s approaching mega gallery status here……

More images have come through from our own Stephanie from SCNA, as well as from Greg Abbott, Meg H and Pierre T. You can see Meg’s full gallery of images here.

The feature shots today are the group shots, a tradition at SOC. With and without people….

——

The gallery is a megamix of images from the people noted above. It’s interesting to see the event from different people’s point of view so I’m very appreciative of all the people who are sending in images.

A slightly interesting ‘aside’ – It’s been interesting to compile these galleries to see what people are photographing. As a Saabologist, it’s been confirmed to me by a whole bunch of polls and discussions that classic Saab 900 is definitely the most revered Saab in the company’s history. And you when people gather at these big events, there seems to be a relatively small number of 900 photos, which older Saabs getting a huge amount of shutter time.

Today’s gallery includes some great shots of Luke Sorensen’s Saab 99 rally car, as well as some photos from the “Heritage Drive” – did you get to drive one of these heritage collection vehicles? – as well as a brilliant image of the yellow convertibles gathered together.

So…..here is today’s gallery. Again, my thanks to all those who’ve submitted images for use here in Inside Saab. You’ve succeeded in making me extremely jealous once again 🙂
