Saab staff driving Saabs

Many of our staff get to drive new Saab vehicles as part of their daily routine. A lot of them are testing vehicle components, or they might have a car assigned to their area for use.

There’s a quite a lot, a majority in fact, who don’t. And seeing many of them have some down time at the moment, we thought it would be a good idea to give them an opportunity to drive most of our latest offerings. A staff drive event kicked off last week at Saab and is running for another few weeks, giving Saab employees the opportunity to check out models that they may not have had a chance to drive yet.

There are four vehicles in the fleet made available for this period.

  • Saab 9-5 TTiD
  • Saab 9-3 Griffin TTiD (low emissions 180hp)
  • Saab 9-3 Griffin Convertible
  • Saab 9-4x

I jumped in with a few guys from our Parts Analysis area today as they took the Saab 9-4x for a spin. The 9-4x is proving to be the most popular model in this test. As it’s not made here in Trollhattan and is only present in very limited numbers here, this presents a prime first opportunity for nearly everyone who gets into the car.

Mats, Johnny and Lars-Erik all took a turn driving the 9-4x and all gave it a resounding thumbs up at the end of the drive.

I sat in the back for the whole trip – a first for me – and was pretty impressed by that panoramic sunroof. Even with the glass section open, the wind is deflected in such a way that you can only feel the faintest feather of a breeze from the back seat.

I also discovered that you can control the radio station from the rear seat control panel – something parents might want to keep in mind if they have curious kiddies in the back (I’m not sure if there’s a way to disable this).

After riding with the guys in the 9-4x, I grabbed the keys for a solo drive in the low emissions Saab 9-3 Griffin TTiD. Once again I came away keenly impressed by the 9-3, which despite some age is carrying itself extremely well.

I was particularly interested in this low emissions model and how it would drive. Saab sell versions of this car with 130, 160 and 180hp and all of them attract tax reductions in appropriate markets. The 180hp version that drove is outstanding. The torque on this car is amazing and it pulls effortlessly from all speeds.

Like many of you, I’m not from a particularly diesel-friendly country so I’ve always owned pertol-driven cars. I’d own this in a heartbeat. It’s so easy to drive and the Griffin enhancements (leather/textile trim, rear spoiler (below), front fogs, etc) accent the vehicle beautifully. This is a great way to send out the 9-3, trust me.

The drive program goes for another few weeks.

I’m sure there are going to be a lot of first-time drives in that time, and a lot of smiling faces as Saab employees get to check out the company’s latest offerings.

If only we could get these into showrooms and on the road!

Fan Week: Mitchell Saab beauty contest

The summer events program for car enthusiasts in North America is coming to a close now that winter draws nearer.

Last weekend, Mitchell Saab in Connecticut held it’s 30th annual Swedish beauty contest along with it’s sister Volvo dealership.

Steve F, who runs the Saabfans weblog, attended the event and was kind enough to send along some photos for me to share on Inside Saab. My thanks to Steve for sending these in.

Mitchell Saab 30th Annual Swedish Beauty Contest

It’s always great to see our dealerships conducting activities like these to bring their customers together.

Mitchell Saab are a long-standing Saab and Volvo dealership based in Simsbury, Connecticut – right in the heart of Saab country in the USA.

This weekend, they’re hosting their 30th Annual Swedish Beauty Contest. There will be a free Mini Detail and Service Clinic running at the event as well.

I was tipped off to the event by Steve F, who runs the Saabfans website, and he writes as follows:

We attended the event last year, and although smaller than some gatherings, it was attended by great Saab and Volvo drivers as well as the wonderful owners and staff at Mitchell.

Simsbury, Connecticut is a beautiful town, and we are approaching the time of year for excellent fall foliage viewing, so why not take a nice Fall drive in your favorite Saab or Volvo and head over to Mitchell for the 2011 Swedish Beauty Contest

It sounds like a wonderful setting and a great way to take in some beautiful scenery in a beautiful Saab. With winter coming on, it might one of your last chances to do so before the spring.

If you’re in the region, perhaps you should plan on calling in.

What: Mitchell Saab 30th Annual Swedish Beauty Contest
When: Saturday, October 15th

Saab 9-5 succeeds in fuel economy challenge (again)

Back in July, I shared a story from Spain about one of our Saab Spain employees participating in – and dominating – a fuel economy challenge with the Saab 9-5.

Ramon Cano and his co-driver, a local journalist from magazine Autofacil, employed some efficient driving techniques and guided their Saab 9-5 to a 17% improvement over the official fuel economy figures for the car.

That was in a Saab 9-5 TiD with an automatic gearbox. Ramon really wanted a petrol/manual version of the car to show the percentage reductions that were really possible, but it wasn’t to be. A similar challenge has just taken place in the UK and this time, the drivers got the car they wanted.

Once again the 9-5 has impressed with a huge 27% improvement over published fuel economy figures. The release from Saab Great Britain:

——

Saab’s commitment to delivering a more fuel efficient drive for its customers was demonstrated amply, when it entered a 2.0-litre petrol turbo 9-5 Saloon Aero in the 2011 ALD Automotive /Shell Fuel Save MPG Marathon; an annual fuel economy driving challenge held over two days and covering a challenging 370-miles designed to replicate a typical motorist’s driving route.

Saab’s 9-5 2.0-litre petrol turbo, driven by motoring journalist Iain Robertson, one of the UK’s top eco drivers, accompanied by his experienced navigator, Robert Marshall, returned an impressive 43.81 mpg, a 27.35% improvement over its official combined fuel figure of 34.4 mpg and a victorious place on the podium.

Iain Robertson commented, “We employed neither ‘tricks’ nor ‘cheats’ to prove the immense potential of the car’s engine. In other words, we relied on the Saab’s engine technology to cut fuel usage and its superior amount of torque, at remarkably low engine speeds, to achieve the improved figure.

“It is only by adopting a series of carefully applied driving techniques that we know the savings were possible. Yet, they are techniques that can be applied by any careful driver.”

It has long been expected that drivers seeking greater fuel economy would creep along main roads and cause other road-users some inconvenience. The Saab entry in the MPG Marathon has disproved that contention.

“The key to obtaining a good fuel return,” continued Iain, “lies in reaching a sensible and legal cruising speed and maintaining it with little more than a whisker of throttle depression. Planning as far ahead as possible, to avoid unnecessary fuel-sapping stops, and accelerating progressively, to pass slower vehicles, are by far the most effective means to driving economically.”

With a company history based on producing vehicles possessing an engineering conscience, Saab endeavours to ensure that even its highly-powered petrol turbo models can return extraordinarily good fuel figures.

Charles Toosey, Managing Director of Saab GB, said, “Excellent on-road performance can still work hand-in-hand with respectable fuel consumption. Even though Saab produces a number of high-performance petrol cars, developing well in excess of 220 hp, allied to exceptional pulling potency of 350 Nm, high fuel costs need not be a consideration, as long as the car is driven in a judicious manner.”

Avoiding harsh acceleration is key but, reaching the required cruising speed, without indulging in the car’s cruise control technology, is also crucial. In fact, maintaining momentum is every bit as important and this is where the ability to plan and look beyond the normal driver’s range of sight is imperative. Block gear shifting (such as going directly from second to fifth gears) and avoiding harsh braking are additional techniques that can be applied.

Naturally, traffic snarl-ups that occur for commuters on today’s roads are known to increase fuel consumption. Yet, Iain Robertson offers an antidote to that situation.

“If a driver is caught up in traffic,” he proposed, “losing one’s cool is an unfortunate by-product. By concentrating, avoiding stop-start scenarios and even seeking alternative routes or departure times, to miss out the traffic build-up, a car’s fuel economy will benefit to new and measurable peaks.”

The Saab 9-5 all turbo powertrain line-up starts at 1.6-litres and carries forward Saab’s rightsizing engine strategy, which focuses on responsible performance through the development of highly efficient and smaller capacity four cylinder turbo engines. Both petrol and diesel engines are offered, with diesel CO2 emissions as low as 125g/km. Prices start from £26,995. For more details on the Saab 9-5 range, visit www.saab.co.uk.

IntSaab 2012 (Belgium) website now online

If you’ve not been to an IntSaab meeting, 2012 is a great opportunity to consider going for the first time. The Belgians are certifiably Saab crazy being so centrally located within Europe, IntSaab 2012 is sure to have a great turnout.

And if you need another reason, the event is being held at Spa, the town that is home to possibly the most beautiful racing circuit in the world, Spa Francorchamps, and all the mystique that goes with it.

The IntSaab 2012 website is now online. Once you’re there, you can see the program for the event and subscribe to their newsletter and stay informed as to what’s going on.

IntSaab 2012 will be on from August 3rd to 5th, with three different pre-tours available from August 1st for those who need a few extra days to justify the travel and want to see a bit more of Belgium. The pre-tours are limited to 25 cars each.

I attended IntSaab 2011 earlier this year in Finland and I can only give this event my highest recommendation. It’s a Saab fan’s must-do at least once.

SaabsUnited Octoberfest – Trollhattan

On Saturday, October 1st, I attended the inaugural Octoberfest organised by Saab enthusiast website, Saabs United. The event was based at ANA, the Saab dealership here in Trollhattan.

Scheduled events in the daytime programme included a Saab 9-4x vehicle demonstration, a Saab 9-3 ePower demonstration, a spare parts sale for older Saabs, as well as presentations by Saab authorised tuners Hirsch Performance, and Saab aftermarket tuners, Maptun.

The Hirsch Saab 9-5, driven up especially for the event from Switzerland:

And the Maptun collection……

Peter Dörrich from Saab demonstrates the Saab 9-4x……

Personally speaking, it was wonderful to see something so vibrant happening at ANA. The health of our distribution network is something very prominent on our minds at Saab, and whilst this was an independent event, it was great to see so many people at a Saab dealership with smiles on their faces.

The happiest man in the room was Joachim Lind, the chief at ANA, who was also pleased to see so many people there:

——

A few personal reflections:

It was a strange feeling for me, attending this event as somewhat of an outsider. As many of you will know, I started writing about Saab nearly 7 years ago now and Saabs United was the site I founded back when GM were selling Saab. I sold Saabs United to the current owner earlier this year, prior to joining Saab Automobile to do the job I’m doing now.

I attended the event mostly as an enthusiast, but also as an employee of Saab and as a blogger, looking to provide coverage of the event here on Inside Saab. An event of this nature is something I could not have contemplated as the owner of Saabs United, as I lived halfway around the world, in Tasmania, Australia. I’m not sure I would have had the courage to organise it, either, as it can be a logistical nightmare to do this things.

What amazed me most about the day was the number of people who traveled quite long distances to be part of a single-day Saab event. There were several people from the United States and Canada there – that’s an ocean away! I met people from Iceland, Portugal, England, Wales, Holland, France, Belgium, Germany, Slovakia, Norway, Denmark, Finland and of course, from all parts of Sweden.

It just goes to show the incredible passion that people have for this car company. I received questions and well-wishes all day from people who were hoping and believing for the best, for Saab. People were very well educated about what’s going on with the company, the situation that we’re in the milestones ahead of us. And people were all wishing for a production re-start, a return to normality, as soon as possible.

——

I didn’t just stick my head in as an observer.

I took a 9-4x along for the occasion and spent the entire afternoon taking people for rides in the new Saab crossover. The feedback from the exercise was very affirming indeed. For many attendees, this was their first opportunity to see a 9-4x up close. A number had had a chance to sit in one at other events, but none had taken a ride in one before. It was great to hear their comments as we drove a circuit from ANA down to the Saab factory and then back ‘the long way’. People got a great feel for how stable and comfortable the car is at speed, how well finished and spacious it is on the inside.

I did 15 or so of these drives, introducing around 50 people to the Saab 9-4x from the inside, which was a whole lot of fun.

——

The day concluded with a dinner at the Nova restaurant, just next to the Saab Museum. Around 120 or so attended, had some wonderful food and conversation, as well being treated to some great stories from the Saabs United Historic Rally Team and special guests, former Saab rally drivers Simo Lampinen and Ola Strömberg.

——

My congratulations have to go to the entire Saabs United crew and their sponsors for a wonderful event. SU owner, Tim Rokka, was the driving force behind the event and the team that he led put on a wonderful gathering that people from all over Europe and beyond enjoyed. It was a true celebration of the Saab Spirit and a wonderful occasion for all who attended.

——

The visitors from other continents flew in, of course, but there were a lot who drove well over 1,000kms to attend the event. With several hundred people attending throughout the day, that means a lot of nice Saabs in the parking lot.

Below is a gallery showing just a portion of the Saabs in attendance at the show.

Grense Rally in Trollhattan

Not so much a Saab event, but a Trollhattan event…..

Last night I popped up to the Saab Museum, which was the start and finish point for the Grense Rallyt, a smaller regularity rally.

There were only 18 vehicles in the field, but it was nice to see them come back to the museum and cross the finish line. I thought I’d share some of the photos from the event with you here.

I have to confess that I don’t know much about this event and where it fits into any larger schedule of historic rallies here in Sweden. It felt like it was part of a larger series, however, given the number of officials and sponsorship that was present.

Regularity rallying is not your full-tilt type of rallying. Regularity involves completing stages as close as possible to a designated average speed. It requires precision calculation and communication between driver and co-driver, rather than flat-out speed and handling. That’s why you’ll see some cars below with minimal modification.

It’s fantastic that a sponsor like Teknikens Varld magazine was able to support the event and I hope there were more people there in the morning to see the vehicles and the level of support provided by Teknikens. Motorsport needs this kind of sponsorship to survive, so it’s great that they were able to help out. The white Porsche is a Cayman R that they’re currently road testing.

Saab events in Italy – incl OctoberFest coming up!

Before I give you the details on the October 1st events happening in Italy, let me recap the Flying Saabs event that was recently held at an airfield in Verona.

It looks like they put a lot of effort into preparing for this event and got a good attendance as a result – so congratulations to the Saab Club Italia for putting it together. Nearly 70 people attended the event, travelling from all over Italy to be there, plus an international attendee from Switzerland.

It was a two-day event and Saab News covered the Sunday proceedings, which for some attendees meant parachute jumping and gliding (it was called ‘Flying Saabs’ for a reason, after all) and for others, it meant throwing their classic Swedish metal around the test track set up at the airfield.

The full report (and HEAPS of photos) are at Saab News.

Congratulations, again. It’s not all to report from Italy, though. See below the photos for Italian plans for a Saab Octoberfest event.

Saab Octoberfest – October 1st

I’ve received the following details from Saabway Club (the other Italian Saab Club) about a gathering planned for October 1st, in conjunction with the Octoberfest activities that will be happening here in Trollhattan, organised by Saabs United.

Anyone in Italy who would like to attend should get the full details here.

The Event will be held at Autodromo della Franciacorta (a region between Milano and Brescia). This is the same location we had for the Saab Support Convoy. Let’s hope it could bring us some luck as it succeded last time! 😉

The program is as follows:

11:00 – Meeting at the track where we’ll find a reserved place to put all our Saabs together in the central parking.

12:00 – Lunch at track’s Restaurant.

15:00 – Possibility to race on Go-Karts and set up a Mini Saabist Kart Grand Prix.

Autofficina Sonia, our Saab Service partner in Milano which is also Hirsch dealer, will make free checkups of the cars with Tech2, they will also make free test drives, inspections, DPF rigenerations, Saab software updates, personalize car software settings and maybe give the possibility to try Hirsch software.

There will be also a list of parts and accessories with special price for the day (details into our forum’s link).

Again, if you’re looking to attend, check out the forum page for this event.

Video – Steph at the 2011 Saab Owners Convention

One of our Saab Cars North America staffers, Stephanie Moore, attended the 2011 Saab Owners Convention in Parsippany, New Jersey. Steph shot a little film there, and we put together a few bits to commemorate the occasion.

Thanks to all who said hello and made Steph and the rest of the SCNA crew feel so welcome. We’ll see you next year at the SOC in Iowa.

Images from Swedish Car Day 2011 (Boston, MA)

These are the first images that have come through to me from Swedish Car Day 2011, hosted by Charles River Saab in Boston, MA.

I was so sad to miss this event and I’m really pleased to see that it went ahead after Hurricane Irene stopped the event being held on it’s intended date a week earlier.

My thanks to Mark S for sending these in. It looks like another fantastic collection of vehicles right from the 96s and Sonetts of yesteryear through to today’s Saab 9-4x.
