Comments response: Saab hybrid? (think eXWD)

The following was written in comments yesterday…..

Steven, I do not mean to post an off-topic response to this particular discussion, but I do have a question about future products. Has Saab considered introducing a hybrid model (gas + battery) into its line up? I know that you had written about various diesel options, but here in the US, there are few diesel cars and the models you find are incredible expensive. It seems the new ultra-efficient “hype” in the US is around solar and electric.

So, does Saab have any such product currently in development?

This is a great opportunity to talk more about something I’m very keen on promoting – the incredible engineering expertise that Saab holds as a company. It’s one of the key reasons this company has so much value.

When you say “gas + battery” people might automatically think of something like the Chevrolet Volt. In that case, the answer is No. We’re not doing a range-extended electric car that’s also powered by a gasoline engine.

However……

Last year, Saab partnered with a company called American Axle to form a joint venture called e-AAM. The main focus of e-AAM’s work is a new electric drive system that will work in conjunction with a gasoline powered car to produce an electrically assisted all-wheel-drive system. The rights to the name eXWD have already been filed.

e-AAM, which formally started operations on October 1 last year, is being led by Peter Johansson, a third-generation Saab guy known as the guru of XWD (he’s the guy Saab sent around the world to introduce the XWD system back in 2008, and he used to build AWD systems with his dad for their privateer rally team).

Some historical reading on eXWD and e-AAM:

Ny Teknik, a Swedish technology magazine, took a good look at the e-XWD system and predicted that it could be a bigger than turbocharging for Saab.

XWD is already the leading system in the world for delivering optimum traction. The downside is that there are efficiency losses in the system, as well as weight gains that can and should be lowered. e-XWD is the answer to that.

In short, you get an electric motor to drive the rear axle in combination with the gasoline engine driving the front. The system weighs around 40% less than a fully mechanical XWD system, and it also thinks and works faster.

Bottom line: when crunching the numbers for the Saab PhoeniX concept car, engineers calculated diesel-like fuel consumption numbers at around 5 litres per 100 kilometers from the 1600cc 200hp gasoline engine and that’s with the benefits of XWD traction for safety and performance.

Back in 2010, I did an interview with Saab engineering guru Mats Fägerhag and I think you’ll find that that article gives a good insight into the system, and why Saab were so keen on developing it:

The technology involves two electric motors being used on the rear axle. Conventional thinking would be to have two large electric motors, one for each wheel. Large motors mean large batteries, or a generator. That means weight, and lack of economy.

The new system developed by Saab, which will be completed by e-AAM is different. There will be a large electric motor providing power and torque. In addition there will be a smaller electric motor that will handle the torque vectoring between the rear wheels. This means a smaller battery, less weight, but a heap more torque that’ll be precisely controlled by the combination rear axle motors.

For initial expected use, the car will still have an internal combustion engine in the front. It’s expected that fuel consumption will be below the fuel consumption of a regular front wheel drive car.

AWD technology and handling with better-than-FWD fuel economy. Now that’s an attractive offering.

As mentioned in that article, the e-XWD system is slated for use in the replacement for the Saab 9-3. The article mentioned a 2012 launch date, which has been pushed out due to this year’s events.

I should mention that this isn’t just pie-in-the-sky theoretical stuff.

Auto Motor and Sport magazine have driven a prototype vehicle and e-AAM have a Youtube channel where you can see some winter testing video from last year.

This is real.

Press Release: Swedish Automobile Continues Discussions With Youngman

Trollhättan, Sweden: Swedish Automobile N.V. (Swan) announces it is in discussion with Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile Co. Ltd. (Youngman) and a bank in China about an equity interest in Swan. The discussions include a short term solution to enable Saab Automobile to pay the November wages and continue reorganization. The outcome of the discussions is still uncertain. Any possible transaction would be subject to the approval of the relevant stakeholders.

Swan will keep the market informed of any developments.

Waiting (still….)

Thoughts for a new week…….

A lot of people are writing to me, asking if we’re going to hear something soon about the sale (or otherwise) of Saab Automobile.

Let me answer all of you at once: I’m waiting just like the rest of you.

Sorry, but I’ve got no magic answers or insights for you. This is a corporate page and we can’t give a running commentary on these constantly changing events. We can’t say anything about what’s going to happen, until it happens. As I’m sure you’ve come to understand by now, this whole process is extremely delicate and complex. It’s the business equivalent of every amusement park ride you’ve ever had, all rolled into one.

There’s a hell of a lot at stake – a car company with thousands of people connected to it, a wonderful past, a promising future, as well as the economic stability of a region and in many respects, a more-than-reasonable portion of Swedish industry. The knock-on effects of this falling one way or the other will have serious consequences for all concerned.

If you’re keeping yourselves well read from a variety of sources then you might sense that reports about this affair are becoming more and more about people and personalities. For me, it would be really unfortunate if that’s what this came down to.

This is about business and keeping a great company alive.

I’m going to sound like a broken record here, but it really does come down to the fact that Saab is a great company, with great products right now, even greater products in the pipeline, a very efficient and flexible factory, a supremely intelligent and committed workforce and a valuable heritage.

The notion that a deal should be struck to save Saab Automobile comes down to one thing and one thing only – That we have something valuable to offer to the right owners and partners.

Which we do.

Thanks once again for your support. I know you’re tired. We’re tired, too, but we keep on working and fighting. I hope the suits can continue to negotiate in good faith and that we can all have a successful outcome to celebrate, sooner rather than later.

Victor Muller on Swedish TV – Skavlan

Friday’s episode of Skavlan is now available online at SVTPlay.

Click here to watch the episode. The section of the show with Victor Muller starts at 38:40 and is in English.

It’s a very candid interview and well worth watching. Victor is asked about the current situation, what the difficulties are with selling Saab and the possibility of salary payments for Christmas. He also covers some of his business background and his relationship with Russian banker, Vladimir Antonov.

And if you enjoy excellent vocal performances, make sure you watch the last 4 minutes after the VM interview 🙂

Victor Muller on Swedish television this evening

For those who aren’t aware yet……

Our Chairman and CEO, Victor Muller, will be appearing on Swedish television this evening, on an interview program called Skavlan.

The program – recorded yesterday – will air on SVT1 at 9pm and it should be available online after the broadcast via SVT Play. I was able to access SVT Play from Australia today, so other countries should hopefully be able to access it, too.

As Victor doesn’t speak Swedish, the interview will be in English.

A few of the Swedish newspapers had people in the audience and they have prepared news stories based on the interview already. If you don’t want to wait for the show, you can get their reports at DI.se, Ttela, Expressen (all in Swedish).

We’ll insert a link, or embed the show, when the online replay becomes available.

Spanish Saab Dealer Tour – Zaragoza and Burgos

Amongst everything else that’s going on, it’s great to see that the Spanish Saab dealer tour has continued through the week with visits to Zaragoza and Burgos.

We have some new photos and stories from the engagements, below.

——

Zaragoza

Below are some pictures from Artal en Zaragoza.

We had the local television station (Aragon TV) taking images, as well as the most important newspaper in the Aragon region (El diario de Aragón) were also there. Both of them are going to prepare reports.

This dealer has Lexus and Porsche showrooms and customers from these brands were invited. One customer who was going to renew his lease with Porsche, upon seeing the 9-4x came to ask about it and now he is thinking of changing his mind. Let’s see what happens!

——

Burgos

Again, the local TV station was there, plus a lot of other local media. We get a lot of press coverage (without paying, which is always good!). Manuel Alcázar (our country director) gave an interview to “Burgos Televisión” and he talked about the products and a little bit about the company situation.

The manager of this dealer (Julián Alonso) is the president of the “Burgos Entrepreneur Association” so we had all the directors form local companies at the burgos event. It was very well received.

Snap Up a Saab – someone will win a Saab today!

I want to send along my best wishes to the five finalists in the Snap Up a Saab competition being run by Saab of North Olmsted. One of those finalists is going to win a brand new Saab of their choice in just a few hours from now.

As I’m writing this, it’s nearly 5.30pm in Ohio. At 7pm, the five finalists, their friends and family and other guests will gather at Saab of North Olmsted and someone’s going to win a car.

Each finalist will be given a key, and one of those keys will pop the locks on a display car in the showroom. The person holding that key will win the Saab of their choice up to a value of $50,000.

The five finalists are:

  • Brian Perez – who drove a 2011 Saab 9-5 during in the competition
  • Mike Tetreault – who drove a 2011 Saab 9-3 during the competition
  • Matthew Stipe – who drove a 2011 Saab 9-3 during the competition
  • Steve McAlonis – who drove a 2011 Saab 9-3 during the competition
  • Timothy Greer – who drove a 2011 Saab 9-4x during the competition

Who will win? And will they choose the same model Saab as the one they drove during their week in the competition?

We’ll have all the details as soon as they’re available.

Good luck to all the finalists and thanks to all the competitors during the whole Snap Up a Saab campaign.

Saab wheels: 1998-today

The wheels maketh the car.

I’ve been writing that line for years and it’s as true today as it was years ago. If you’ve got a plain looking car, you’ll be amazed at how much better it could look with the right wheels.

Saab have provided a lot of different wheels on their options list over the years. I used to have an entry online with all of them showing, but I got an email from a European Saab fan earlier this week, stating that they couldn’t find it. I had a look around and I couldn’t find it either, so I figured it might be good to do it over again.

This collection only shows wheels from the original Saab 9-5 and 9-3 onwards (i.e around 1998 until now). I’ve tried to make sure the collection is complete, but I know there will be some missing.

If you want to see wheels from earlier Saabs, I’d recommend you check out Peacetek.net’s page on Saab wheels. There’s also my photos of Saab Wheels at Intsaab, from earlier this year (pictorial only, no info).

The following images are taken from the Saab Global Accessories page.

The image title contains the Saab part number for the wheel, where it is known to me. I don’t have the dealer codes that were used for the wheels (ALU #).

The common model (9-3 or 9-5) for which the wheel was used is shown in the photo.

Distraction……. Koenigsegg take 0-300-0 record

Consider this one a personal indulgence……. and something to pass the time as we wait on other things.

From one Swedish company to another, I just wanted to pass along some congratulations to Koenigsegg for their recent supercar achievement. First, because they’re Swedish, and second, because they’re super-cool. They are the epitome of “Subzero”.

I was very pleased to read my news feeds today and see that Koenigsegg have just been awarded a Guinness World Record for the fastest car to accelerate from zero to 300km/h and then back to zero again.

0-300-0 in just 21.19 seconds.

——

For those of you who don’t know, there is some history between Koenigsegg and Saab. A group fronted by Koenigsegg tried to buy Saab from General Motors back in 2009. That bid ultimately fell short when Koenigsegg pulled out of the deal in November 2009.

During that time, I had a chance to meet Christian von Koenigsegg at the Frankfurt Motor Show, when the Saab 9-5 was launched. In 2010, whilst on holiday in Sweden, I had a chance to visit the Koenigsegg facility in Ängelholm and take a tour of the factory.

I also got to go for a ride 🙂

We didn’t do the 0-300-0 run, but we came close…..

The engineering in these cars is absolutely amazing. The “no-hands” run should give you an idea as to just how rock-solid these cars are. The acceleration is brutal and as you can hear from my reactions, the braking is just as enjoyable.

So, again, my congratulations to this outstanding Swedish company on being recognised by Guinness for their work.
