Tim and Jennifer Snap Up a Saab 9-5

Just a little bit of final follow-up……

Here’s how it feels to enter a competition and WIN a brand new Saab

The Snap Up a Saab competition, run by Saab of North Olmsted, was won recently by a guy named Tim Greer. Tim, his wife Jennifer and their two kids are now the proud owners of a new Saab 9-5 Aero, their chosen prize from the Saab range.

Tim was a contestant in week 1 of the four-week competition, driving a Saab 9-4x during that time. Saab of North Olmsted is part of the Collection Auto Group and Tim heard about the competition because he’s on their email list, having been a customer for some years now. I spoke with Tim and Jennifer last week about their experience.

“I couldn’t believe that they were letting people test drive cars for a week, and then win one. I signed up, probably within three minutes of getting the email.” said Tim.

Whilst this was Tim and Jennifer’s first experience with Saab of North Olmsted, it’s not their first Saab.

“When we got married, a Saab was actually the first vehicle that we purchased together. We got a white 9-3 Convertible with a blue top…..” said Tim.

“….which I loved!” said Jennifer. “Unfortunately our family grew and it wasn’t practical anymore, just because it was a convertible. I’d love to eventually get one of those for our daughter, for her first car.”

As mentioned earlier, Tim drove the Saab 9-4x during his week in the competition, which he was quite impressed with. Tim’s brother had a Saab 9-7x, Saab’s earlier model SUV, and Tim compared the 9-4x very favourably to its older brother.

“The handling, the way it sat on the road….. I’d much prefer the 9-4x to the 9-7x.” he said. “It’s the best of both worlds.”

Despite this, they chose a 9-5 Aero for their prize. Jet black metallic with a shark grey interior. The model choice was largely Jennifer’s to make, as she would be driving the car the most.

“I just love the idea of having a car that handled well, is luxurious inside, but also has four-wheel-drive. We live in Cleveland and we get loads and loads of snow. To be able to have that utility is great.”

Tim and Jennifer have two kids, aged 3 and 4. Jennifer: “They have been talking about ‘The Saab’ ever since we entered the competition. To them, it was a given that we’d bring it home. I don’t think they had any thought in their mind that we wouldn’t win. They were really excited because it had TV’s in the back and when we won it, the first thing they did was take off their shoes and jump in the back. They were treating it like a formal dining room.”

This was, of course, a promotional competition and Tim and Jennifer promoted the company a LOT during their time driving the Saab 9-4x. Many other contestants did, too, providing a lot of publicity for both Saab and for the North Olmsted dealership.

They worked quite hard during that week in the competition, emailing and calling friends and getting people engaged in the competition, to see the car and to vote for their efforts. Whilst the competition built momentum towards the end of the four weeks, it had a slower beginning, something that Jennifer thinks would change if they ran it again.

“When it started, I don’t think people realised so much what was involved. Once it got going, people got a better idea of what was happening. I think they ran another one now, they’d have a lineup with people trying to enter.” said Jennifer.

The final saw 5 contestants gather at Saab of North Olmsted. Each was given a key that was randomly selected. Only one key would open the doors of a Saab in the showroom, indicating the winner.

“We didn’t talk a whole lot. I think everyone was pretty nervous. I don’t know if I was more nervous because I was going to be on live TV, or because I had a chance to win a car.” said Tim. “There were a few sweaty palms there.”

In TV terms, it might have been a bit of an anti-climax that Tim was the first to try his key – no added tension from a couple of unsuccessful attempts before the winner is revealed. For Tim, it was happiness, then confusion, then a whole LOT of happiness.

“When we picked our keys, the dealer told us that when someone wins, we should be prepared because it was going to be loud. They set up the scene so that I could see the car as I hit my button. I saw the lights go on and I heard the locks pop, but no-one said anything. Because it was quiet for that first few seconds, I thought something had gone wrong, that it had gone off accidentally. Then we heard a few alarm beeps and that’s when everyone started cheering.”

Here’s the live recorded video of the win. Skip ahead to 8m30s to see the action.

I have to feel a little sorry (and a little bit amused) for the other four contestants being ushered away so quickly. Tim going first really did take some of the air out of the room.

But what an exciting moment!! And what a conclusion and reward for a week or so’s hard (but fun) work, driving and promoting the new Saab 9-4x.

Tim and Jennifer picked up their new Saab 9-5 Aero last Friday. On behalf of Saab Automobile, and I’m sure I speak for Saab of North Olmsted as well, I’d like to congratulate them on their win and wish them many happy years with their new Saab 9-5.

I’d also like to thank all of the participants in the Snap Up a Saab competition, who I hope had a wonderful time participating.

Snap Up a Saab – someone will win a Saab today!

I want to send along my best wishes to the five finalists in the Snap Up a Saab competition being run by Saab of North Olmsted. One of those finalists is going to win a brand new Saab of their choice in just a few hours from now.

As I’m writing this, it’s nearly 5.30pm in Ohio. At 7pm, the five finalists, their friends and family and other guests will gather at Saab of North Olmsted and someone’s going to win a car.

Each finalist will be given a key, and one of those keys will pop the locks on a display car in the showroom. The person holding that key will win the Saab of their choice up to a value of $50,000.

The five finalists are:

  • Brian Perez – who drove a 2011 Saab 9-5 during in the competition
  • Mike Tetreault – who drove a 2011 Saab 9-3 during the competition
  • Matthew Stipe – who drove a 2011 Saab 9-3 during the competition
  • Steve McAlonis – who drove a 2011 Saab 9-3 during the competition
  • Timothy Greer – who drove a 2011 Saab 9-4x during the competition

Who will win? And will they choose the same model Saab as the one they drove during their week in the competition?

We’ll have all the details as soon as they’re available.

Good luck to all the finalists and thanks to all the competitors during the whole Snap Up a Saab campaign.

"Snap up a Saab" – semi-finals

Saab of North Olmsted’s competition – Snap up a Saab – is now at the quarter final stage. In just days from now, someone is going to walk away the proud owner of a new Saab of their choice to the value of $50,000.

To recap the competition so far:

Over the last 4 weeks, groups of drivers have been driving vehicles supplied by Saab of North Olmsted. 4 weeks, 4 groups. Their task, during their week with the vehicle, was to show it to as many people as possible, gathering fans, shares (and points) via QR codes, facebook, twitter or on the competition homepage.

The six top point-gatherers from each week are now at the semi-final stage and have less than 48 hours to gather as many points as possible.

Someone’s going to win a new Saab!!

The Snap up a Saab competition webpage now lists the finalists for each week. You can click on a finalist’s individual page, watch their video, check out their pictures and most importantly – cast your vote.

The 5 top semi-finalists will go into the final, where they’ll have a 1-in-5 chance of unlocking the doors to a new Saab, thereby giving them the win, and the Saab of their choice.

Make sure you head over to the competition page, support your favourite entrant and help them to spread the word about Saab – and win a new one of their own!!!

Saabosphere – links we liked this week

It’s been another week of waiting in Saab land.

I know you’re all getting antsy. I can’t sit still and I’m worn through to the scalp from scratching my head so much.

Here are some links from this week…..

——

It’s good to see some video posted for the Snap up a Saab competition. The competition is about to enter its fourth and final week for regular entrants.

I hope some readers of this website have jumped on board because it really is a great opportunity to share some of the Saab Spirit around, and if you work hard enough for a week or so, you’ve got a very good chance at winning yourself the new Saab of your choice.

Here’s the video. It’s “Vote for me” rather than the vehicle itself, but good to see some expanding their reach, which is what the competition is all about.

——

Back when Saab were being sold by General Motors, we sold off some old technology to Beijing Automotive, or BAIC.

BAIC are reportedly ready to unveil their new Saab-based sedan to the Chinese market at the upcoming Guangzhou Motor Show.

China Car Times has the article and some photoshop guesswork as to what the car will look like. This model is based on the previous generation Saab 9-5 and I’m sure Saab fans will find it interesting to follow the direction this particular branch of the family tree ends up taking.

There are also some mule spyshots here. The interior is certainly quite different to the original.

——

It’s not the greatest article, but the headline raises an interesting thought – Could the Saab 9-4x become the rarest new vehicle in the world?

I think it will be one of the biggest injustices ever if that comes to pass and I hold out hope that this will be proven to be just another piece of smart speculation.

The Saab 9-4x is an absolute cracker of a vehicle and with a chance to properly market it, it would be a big hit for Saab. A friend of mine in Germany got to drive the Saab 9-4x Aero recently, as part of the German Saab dealer tour. You can read his thoughts here.

——

Whilst we’re talking Saab dealer tours, I’m reliably told the next market to host the tour will be Spain. I’m still waiting on getting dates and locations and will bring those to the site as soon as I get them.

——

Finally, a couple of absolutely fantastic Saab 99 advertisements from the 1970s.

They’re featured along with a number of other automotive advertisements from the period and they look fantastic.

My thanks to Fredrik T via Twitter.

Saabosphere – links we like in the middle of this week

It’s a little unusual for me to do a Saabosphere in the middle of the week, but there were a few good things out there worth sharing.

Via Saabworld, here’s a great video from Autoweek.nl. They travelled to Trollhattan recently to have a chat with some Saab employees, as well as some of the locals. Their interviews gauged feelings about the recently announced Memorandum of Understanding with Youngman and Pang Da. It should be noted that the interviews were conducted before General Motors made their preliminary announcement of not supporting the deal.

The video is mostly in Dutch, however the interviews are conducted in English.

——

Is it time for another poll?

Auto Express have also written a story about the Saab/Youngman/Pang Da deal, with their focus being on future Saab models.

They claim an image of the Saab 9-3 replacement vehicle in the story, however it should be noted that it’s not an official image and not one that we have any comment on. All images claimed or shown by magazines should be viewed as their own. We’ll show ours when we’re good and ready 🙂

The Snap Up a Saab competition continues……

Seriously, if you’re within reasonable distance of Saab of North Olmsted and you haven’t submitted an application for Week 4 of this competition, you’re missing out on what is possibly your best opportunity to win a new Saab of your choice.

All it will take is a week’s hard work, showing the car around and getting your friends and connections to share the vehicle as well.

——

Life with Saab has an interesting post about real-life fuel consumption figures in the Saab 9-5 TiD.

The author, Arild, has achieved fuel consumption figures under 5 liters per 100km. That’s 47mpg for you folks in the USA and 56mpg for folks in the UK.

That’s pretty darn good for a car with that much space. Sure beats the carrying capacity of a Yaris.

And last but not least…..

A study of the modern history of the Saab front grille. Do you have a favourite?

Snap Up a Saab promotion finishing week 1

Want to get yourself a new Saab for just a single week’s hard work?

Saab of North Olmsted kicked off their Snap Up a Saab competition last weekend and it looks like they had a great take-off.

If you haven’t heard about this competition yet, it’s a huge promotion involving up to 100 cars and contestants per week with a big social media element involved. Here’s my previous entry detailing the competition.

Vehicles used in the competition have a scannable QR code on the inside and outside. Contestants take the car for a week and have to get as many supporters scanning the QR codes as possible. Contestants can also take photos of the vehicles and submit them to their own competition website. Contestants get points for all of these activities, and for ‘checking in’ at sponsor locations.

The website you need to bookmark in order to see what contestants are doing is here: Snap Up a Saab. Each contestant has their own individual page and you can check out their points score, as well as photos submitted by their followers. Some of the photos have been great, too.

——

There are quite a few contestants with point totals in the hundreds.

That’s not going to do it for you, folks. The top 6 contestants with around 20 hours to go in week 1 are as follows:

Kristina – 3363 points
Timothy – 2233 points
Lauren – 2225 points
Nada – 2153 points
Linda – 2101 points
Paula – 1959 points

Those top 6 contestants, should they remain ranked in the top 6 for the week, will progress through to the next round of the competition, which will take place after the four preliminary rounds.

Contestants earn points as follows:

  • Fans – Contestants earn points for having others “Become a Fan” on their Contestant Sites, or using Facebook and/or Twitter. – 10 points per fan
  • Scans – Contestants earn points when people scan the Test Vehicle QR Codes. – 2pts for exterior scans, 5pts for interior scans
  • Media – Contestants earn points for posting pictures and videos. – 1pt for each picture and 5pts for each video. Must be unique.
  • Check-ins – Contestants earn points when their Test Vehicle is first scanned at a Sponsor location – 25 pts for the first scan at each sponsor location.

So, if you’ve got friends who are active on social media, if you can use a camera and can stop in at sponsor locations, you’re a good chance to do well.

And the big prize – a new Saab valued at up to $50,000

Week 2 will start tomorrow.

You can still register to be part of week three or four if you’re in the area.

Click here to register. There are 100 opportunities per week and you’ll have a blast. And if you work hard enough, you could earn yourself a new Saab!!

HUGE Saab promotion in Ohio – Snap up a Saab!

Saab of North Olmsted are undertaking a massive Saab promotion next month and if you’re in their region, north-eastern Ohio, then YOU could play a big part in it.

For four consecutive weeks, Saab of North Olmsted will give out 100 cars for week-long test drives as part of a competition/promotion they’re running. Do the math – they’re looking for 400 participants, 100 per week. If you’ve ever thought of actively promoting Saab, this is your opportunity – and you could win the Saab of your choice, too!

How it works:

You register your interest here.

If successful, you’ll get a Saab to drive for a week, with a capped distance of 350 miles that can be travelled in that week. The car will come with two QR codes, one inside and one outside. A QR code is a 2D scannable code (most smartphones have a QR code scanner built in) that will link people to a website.

As a weekly-round contestant, you will get your own microsite where your adventures will be recorded. You’ll have a week to check-in at sponsor outlets, get people to scan the codes on your car, get them to take pictures or make videos to submit to your microsite, and generally just build up your fan-base. The more check-ins, scans, media and fans you get, the more points you get.

Points are tallied each week and the initial 400 contestants will be whittled down to 24 for the semis – the top six point totals each week will progress. Semi-finalists will have two days to whip-up as much interest as possible and increase their point totals. The top five point winners in the semi-finals make it to the final stage of the competition.

The final stage of the competition will see our five finalists assemble at Saab of North Olmsted, where they’ll select a keyfob and press the “unlock” button. One of those keyfobs will send lights flashing and that lucky winner will win the Saab of their choice valued at up to $50,000

——

Everyone wins

Discounts on Saab vehicles will be offered to all participants in the competition, regardless of how you participate.

Finalists will be offered the most substantial discounts for their efforts in the competition.

Weekly-round competitors will be offered the next most substantial discount.

But that’s not all……. Just by spotting one of the Saabs on the road and scanning the QR code, you will also be offered an attractive discount – just for being a part of the promotion.

——

Get into it!

This is the perfect storm for a competition – limited geographic area, limited participants, heaps of fun and a high value prize. You’ve got everything to gain from being in it.

If you’re in the north-east Ohio area, then click here to register your interest and get ready for the test drive of a lifetime!

Share your view of Saab in New York and win!

REMINDER – Those of you attending the New York Auto Show this weekend…… don’t forget to get your photo in so that you can WIN!

——

A couple of notes about the New York Auto Show, which continues until its close on Sunday evening…..

What is your view of Saab?

If you’re attending the New York Auto Show, then make sure you track down one of the attendants at the Saab stand and get your hands on the Sony Ericsson Xperia in their pocket.

Saab and Sony Ericsson are running another photo competition at the New York Auto Show and there are some fantastic prizes available every day and a grand prize at the show’s conclusion. To enter, simply use the Xperia’s camera to take a photo at the Saab stand showing “your view of Saab”. You will be asked for an email address for the entry, but this email will only be used for the purposes of the competition (i.e. to notify you if you win a prize).

Daily winners receive a MW600 wireless HiFi headset that can pair with your phone, PC or provide music on the run with it’s built in radio.

The grand prize winner at the end of the show will win the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, the first phone to couple a Playstation control for gaming and a full-feature Android phone together in one slick device.

The photo contest has had a great reception so far and you can read full details about the competition, as well as seeing all the entries so far, over at Saab’s Facebook page. Here’s a sample of what you’ll see:

——

Make sure you pick up a program at the show, even if only as a Saab souvenir.

Why? Well, take a look at the front cover (at right).

That’s the Saab PhoeniX concept dominating the program, which is a fantastic coup for Saab. It continues a long line of Saab concept car success, following on from the Saab Aero-X and Saab 9-X BioHybrid and 9-X Convertible concepts, all of which won accolades at their respective auto shows.

Years from now it’ll be the PhoeniX concept that kids remember first when they thumb through their copy of the program once again.
