Inside Koenigsegg – Test Drive

It’s time for episode 5 in the Inside Koenigsegg series.

This episode features the man with one of the best jobs in the world – Robert Serwanski. He’s Koenigsegg’s test driver, the man who fine tunes every car before it leaves the factory to be with its owner.

Robert gives a wonderful overview of what’s involved with the final preparation of the car. It’s incredibly detailed and remember, he does this for every car that leaves the Koenigsegg factory. This is the sort of attention to detail that a Koenigsegg owner’s money buys.

Enjoy the film.

Inside Koenigsegg – Interior surfacing

The fourth instalment of the Inside Koenigsegg series was released today and it’s another amazing insight into the level of detail that goes into these cars.

Remember, Koenigsegg are currently finishing just the 100th car in the company’s history. Economies of scale don’t exist here. If there was ever an element of the car where you could shave off some time or money, it might be some of the hidden areas in the interior. After all, they don’t do much to make it go faster or handle better, do they?

Like everything else, though, the smallest details matter. As Koenigsegg like to say:

Every single detail of a Koenigsegg car is measured against our continuing goal: to enhance vehicle performance. This is reflected in everything we do. Nothing is insignificant.

Imagine taxing your brain on such complexities as developing your own engine, your own suspension, your aerodynamics – all that fundamental performance car stuff – and then putting your mind to developing a special bespoke spring system for mounting the buttons on your dashboard. Unbelievable.

Enjoy this latest instalment.

Inside Koenigsegg – Perfect Paint

It’s good to be back home after a few days away. While I was gone, though, I missed out on posting Episode 3 of the Inside Koenigsegg series from Youtube.

This episode takes you into the paint shop for a good look at the preparation and painting process. As with all of these episodes, you’ll end up with an appreciation of just how detailed these amazing cars are.

200 hours of polishing per car? Here’s a few other fun facts from my own previous visits to Koenigsegg – the time each car spends in the paintshop isn’t measured in hours, it’s actually measured in weeks. And the guy who runs the whole show was the former lead painter at Rolls Royce.

My favourite part of the video is “weight in the right places” – referring to 1 extra kilogram that I’m quite sure Christian lost plenty of sleep over.

Enjoy.

Inside Koenigsegg – Triplex Suspension

It’s time for the second instalment in the Inside Koenigsegg series and this week, Christian takes us through Koenigsegg’s Triplex suspension setup.

It’s this level of detailed thinking and innovation that makes Koenigsegg such an outstanding little car company to me. There isn’t a single component on the car that is too minor to optimise and it’s all done in-house by a tiny team of dedicated professionals.

In this episode you’ll learn how the Agera’s unique Triplex suspension system works and why Koenigsegg developed it. Talking about comfort in a car with such extreme raw performance may sound like a misnomer, but I’ve driven a CCX myself and I can tell you it’s a very comfortable car to drive (and that’s without Triplex). You could easily use it on a day to day basis if the prospect of someone damaging it wasn’t so scary.

This series is turning out to be a milestone in educating people as to what goes on at the pointy end of vehicle design and development. I hope you all enjoy the insight.

Inside Koenigsegg – Carbon Fibre

Episode 1 of the Inside Koenigsegg series is now online.

I can’t say enough about how much I admire Christian von Koenigsegg and his company’s work. This first episode gives you a small insight into building carbon fibre parts for Koenigsegg cars.

Listen close and you might begin to appreciate the level of detail that goes into designing, engineering and then making these parts. Nothing is accidental. Everything is measured, weighed and optimised. It’s amazing stuff. Consider that regular car companies have hundreds or thousands of people to do this stuff, yet Koenigsegg do pretty much all their design and engineering in-house.

It really is car-making on a completely different level from all but a tiny handful of manufacturers.

Enjoy.
