Saabosphere – links we like this week

I have a feeling that next week, we’re going to be liking a lot of links from Ohio!

For this week, however, here’s a quick run down of some key Saaby stories on the web.

——

Life with Saab has what I think is a good outsider analysis of what’s expected to be happening today at Saab. I wish there were more to give, but ‘radio silence’ is the buzzword right now and as always, I’m a good soldier.

——

There is some news buzz floating around the web about salaries at Saab. I can pass on that money has been received under the government guarantee applicable for companies in reconstruction. This doesn’t cover the full month of October, however, and calculations are being made to distribute the funds equitably, which will be done ASAP. Arrears will also be made up as soon as funds are available.

——

Just Saab, a dealership with two outlets in Ohio, USA, recently participated in an autocross day with a number of their customers.

Saabs United has the full story at that link, with pictures.

The results are here (Saab’s in a separate class). You’ll be amazed at how the 9-4x performed in the Saab group!

——

Anyone else see the guy on the Maptun Facebook page who tattooed his foot?

Ouch!

Actually, there have been a number of Saab tattoos turning up recently. Perhaps we need a feature investigation on this?

——

Ericsson have sold their stake in the Sony-Ericsson communications venture to Sony, ending the Swedish company’s interest.

Sad for us, as we used to have a wonderful co-operation with them at motor shows, getting people to take photos of the Saab stand with the Xperia phones.

——

And finally, a video mashup put together by Saablime that we’ve been liking for a while now.

HUGE Saab promotion in Ohio – Snap up a Saab!

Saab of North Olmsted are undertaking a massive Saab promotion next month and if you’re in their region, north-eastern Ohio, then YOU could play a big part in it.

For four consecutive weeks, Saab of North Olmsted will give out 100 cars for week-long test drives as part of a competition/promotion they’re running. Do the math – they’re looking for 400 participants, 100 per week. If you’ve ever thought of actively promoting Saab, this is your opportunity – and you could win the Saab of your choice, too!

How it works:

You register your interest here.

If successful, you’ll get a Saab to drive for a week, with a capped distance of 350 miles that can be travelled in that week. The car will come with two QR codes, one inside and one outside. A QR code is a 2D scannable code (most smartphones have a QR code scanner built in) that will link people to a website.

As a weekly-round contestant, you will get your own microsite where your adventures will be recorded. You’ll have a week to check-in at sponsor outlets, get people to scan the codes on your car, get them to take pictures or make videos to submit to your microsite, and generally just build up your fan-base. The more check-ins, scans, media and fans you get, the more points you get.

Points are tallied each week and the initial 400 contestants will be whittled down to 24 for the semis – the top six point totals each week will progress. Semi-finalists will have two days to whip-up as much interest as possible and increase their point totals. The top five point winners in the semi-finals make it to the final stage of the competition.

The final stage of the competition will see our five finalists assemble at Saab of North Olmsted, where they’ll select a keyfob and press the “unlock” button. One of those keyfobs will send lights flashing and that lucky winner will win the Saab of their choice valued at up to $50,000

——

Everyone wins

Discounts on Saab vehicles will be offered to all participants in the competition, regardless of how you participate.

Finalists will be offered the most substantial discounts for their efforts in the competition.

Weekly-round competitors will be offered the next most substantial discount.

But that’s not all……. Just by spotting one of the Saabs on the road and scanning the QR code, you will also be offered an attractive discount – just for being a part of the promotion.

——

Get into it!

This is the perfect storm for a competition – limited geographic area, limited participants, heaps of fun and a high value prize. You’ve got everything to gain from being in it.

If you’re in the north-east Ohio area, then click here to register your interest and get ready for the test drive of a lifetime!

——

Saab Dealer Tour in Germany is underway!

For the next few weeks, the team at Saab Germany are going mobile. They have a fleet of new Saab vehicles that they’re taking on the road to show to customers in dealerships around the country.

Here’s the team picking up their Saabs at the front gate in Trollhattan. Image courtesy of Tom K, Saabblog.net

A couple of German Saab bloggers have been invited along to different legs of the tour, too, and you should be able to follow their adventures on both Saabblog (German) and Saabs United (English).

The tour will finish on November 9th. The various dates and locations are at the end of this article.

The tour kicked off today with a visit to Kiel.

If some of those cars look familiar to you, it’s because we’ve featured them here on Inside Saab once before. The service partner in Kiel is run by the Lafrentz family and they had some of their fleet of vintage and modern Saabs out front to welcome visitors.

Markus Lafrentz was kind enough to send me some photos from the tour visit today. They had a good group of around 40 families in to view the Saab 9-4x and 9-5 today during the short two-hour session before the tour moved on to its next location. Visitors were reported to be well pleased with the chance to view the new Saab range up close and personal.

Mitchell Saab 30th Annual Swedish Beauty Contest

It’s always great to see our dealerships conducting activities like these to bring their customers together.

Mitchell Saab are a long-standing Saab and Volvo dealership based in Simsbury, Connecticut – right in the heart of Saab country in the USA.

This weekend, they’re hosting their 30th Annual Swedish Beauty Contest. There will be a free Mini Detail and Service Clinic running at the event as well.

I was tipped off to the event by Steve F, who runs the Saabfans website, and he writes as follows:

We attended the event last year, and although smaller than some gatherings, it was attended by great Saab and Volvo drivers as well as the wonderful owners and staff at Mitchell.

Simsbury, Connecticut is a beautiful town, and we are approaching the time of year for excellent fall foliage viewing, so why not take a nice Fall drive in your favorite Saab or Volvo and head over to Mitchell for the 2011 Swedish Beauty Contest

It sounds like a wonderful setting and a great way to take in some beautiful scenery in a beautiful Saab. With winter coming on, it might one of your last chances to do so before the spring.

If you’re in the region, perhaps you should plan on calling in.

What: Mitchell Saab 30th Annual Swedish Beauty Contest
When: Saturday, October 15th
Where: Mitchell Saab, 348 Hopmeadow St, Simsbury, CT

Limited: Saab 9-4x in Ice Pearl and Atlantic Blue

I don’t normally do posts about vehicles a specific dealer has for sale, but I think you’ll understand why I’m covering these two vehicles when you see them.

These photos arrived overnight from the outbox of Just Saab in Ohio.

They show a couple of Saab 9-4x’s the dealership has just acquired for re-sale – and they’re rather special. The cars are 2011 models but feature exclusive paint/trim combinations that aren’t available as standard on the 2011 Saab 9-4x range. They are very early production models and have been used by Saab Cars NA for the last few months before being offered for sale.

Both cars have some miles on them (around 5-6K) but I’m sure you’ll agree they look absolutely stunning. I don’t think they’ll hand around for long.

Faith in Saab – One dealer’s perspective

The following was sent in via email from AJ Murphy, General Manager of Just Saab, a dealership in Cincinnati, Ohio.

——

It’s no surprise to anyone that has followed the Saab business for the last couple of years that we are an easy target in the media. Often there are biased, personal feelings dominating articles and commentary. Understandably expected by the ‘blogs’ but it’s now creeping into the more established, well-respected outlets that you expect to get factual, balanced reporting from.

Saab is not for everyone. No question. We don’t sell a lot of cars…even in our heyday we were considered a minor player in the market.

Our labels have been many: Irrelevant, re-badged GM products, dying, too expensive, and on and on.

I am baffled by such strong personal feelings for Saab’s demise. If Saab is not for you, fair enough. But strangely those who dislike Saab are almost drawn to us…they can’t stay away or stop talking about us. It’s almost as if they take joy in the struggles.

For example:

I responded recently to a personal tweet from an Automotive Analyst, which said:

“I’d like to pull the plug of the respirator that’s keeping Saab alive”

Then another that said:

“Can Saab please die and stop clogging my Twitter feed??”

This, coming from an industry-professional who has been quoted in a couple of different articles about the future of Saab? Seems like strange behavior but maybe I’m too thin-skinned. [Ed: You’re not. The internet has given rise to a need for many to grab as many eyeballs as possible and glib throwaway one-liners are the biggest club in the bag for many – SW]

Getting to my purpose in writing this…

I was recently quoted in an article by a widely-read industry publication with the headline, “Steady drip of bad news wears on Saab dealers”. My words were recorded accurately. But I was still left troubled by the context of the article. I’ll explain why.

A quick note from dealer-land

There are plenty of media outlets willing to write Saab off at the moment. I’ve contended several times on this website that the long-term future for Saab is very bright and it’s just a short-term cash crisis we have to concern ourselves with right now.

Any time you’ve got great people, a great plant, a great brand and most importantly, new product, then you’ve got something that people will be interested in.

AJ Murphy from Just Saab, Ohio (two outlets) left the following double-barrel story in comments last night and I think it speaks to the potential lying dormant in this brand. Of course, everything hinges on the production re-start, but once we get to re-launch this company again, there’s so much that we can achieve…..

——

My first point:

Tonight we had a couple in looking at new Saabs. They own a new Cadillac SRX. They came to the store surprised that Saab still existed…Admittedly they fell prey to the media’s coverage of ‘GM’s shedding of brands’ ending when Saturn, Hummer, Pontiac and Saab were announced as the brands they’ll extract from their portfolio (another story).

They loved the ‘new’ Saab styling i.e. NG 9-5, 9-4x, and 9-3 sedan. They even gushed over the styling of the 9-4x. Particularly when I told them it shared architecture with their SRX. He admitted he liked Saab’s styling better…said the lines were more ‘natural’…as he pointed to his tail lights. 🙂

They left pleasantly surprised at what Saab had to offer. They were equally as baffled by why the message wasn’t being communicated (more effectively) that we’re not dead and that our product portfolio is so impressive (these folks were comparing us with the cream of the Euro crop: Merc, BMW, Audi, etc).

My second point:

We’re seeing increasing interest in the 9-4x. Sales are starting off far better than the new 9-5 did. The challenge is inventory…we have just 2 in Dayton and only one in Cincinnati. We’re having to buy from other dealers.

Despite all the forces pulling us down, people are still buying Saabs. And not just bargain-basement, giveaway-priced Saabs, either. 9-4s are selling at little discount off sticker which is a product of ‘right-pricing’, the Aero 9-5 is the best selling 9-5 in our store and the 9-5 is outselling the 9-3 combi, convertible and sedan…combined.

A good sign, right?

So, simply (<--tongue-in-cheek) get the news going in the right direction, re-start production, get us the inventory of 9-4's, and I assure you the North American dealers will get this train back on track. AJ Murphy Just Saab

Saabosphere – Saab links we liked this week

I do not know if this is real.

I suspect that it isn’t.

But it’s nice.

Sometimes ‘the social space’ can be tough to deal with. Consumers have a voice through social media and much of the time, they use it to voice complaints or opinions that companies need to address, either to solve an issue or to correct a misconception. That’s OK, we deal with it.

Occasionally you get a social story that shows the way this new medium can be used for good.

Susan Scrupski runs a website called ITS Insider, where she tracks various IT Services industry issues and trends. She’s a heavy-hitter in this space, too, being named one of Fast Company’s most influential women in technology for 2010, and with thousands of Twitter followers, Facebook friends and Google+ listings.

Roger Beasley Saab in Austin, Texas, probably knew none of this when Susan walked into their dealership last weekend to take a look at a car from Saab’s Pre-Owned program. But when they gave her fantastic service and a finance deal that suited her needs (rather than theirs) they won her praise.

I came across Susan’s story from her Twitter feed. She has over 7,000 followers and many of them will have read about it as well. Susan detailed her experience on her personal blog and you can read the whole story there (and I recommend that you do).

Amazing car buying experience at Roger Beasley Saab this weekendTaking It Personal.

The lessons:

  • for customers – it’s OK to use your voice for the power of good.
  • for dealers – you never know who’s walking into your showroom. Always provide the best service you can for the good of the customer.
  • for Roger Beasley Saab – Continue to look after Susan, just as she’s looked after you.

Congratulations to Roger Beasley Saab for earning the shout-out and to Susan on the acquisition of the new-to-her Saab 9-5.

Most of us will have been to car shows in our local areas. Given that this is a Saab website, I imagine most of you would have been to shows where Saabs figure prominently, perhaps alongside many other makes that originate in your country.

When “your country” is Russia, that makes for an exhibition of vehicles that many of us don’t get to see too often.

Yes, there’s a Saab in there, and plenty of other interesting metal as well.

Need I say more?

——

We’ll have more on this in coming days, but for now, if you’re in Great Britain, keep an eye out for the Nomad Theatre, popping up in a place near you.

Here’s what it was like last weekend, at Hampton Court Palace.

From Tobias A, via Twitter:

Wonder if we can expect any news on the current situation from Saab this week? @Inside_saab Keeping my fingers crossed!!!

I’ll tell you all what I told Tobias in response, because I know there are a lot of eyes on the company at the moment.

Officially speaking, we don’t do speculation. We can’t comment on matters that involve potential investors, or matters that are under discussion and incomplete. I try to bring some commentary and perspective from time to time (which some choose to interpret and dismiss as spin, but which they took as insight back in my SU days).

We will always bring you hard news as soon as it’s appropriate to do so.

Stay tuned. We appreciate your concern and support and despite what some say, our executive team are working their tails off to solve our current issues.

If you want to follow Inside Saab at Twitter, it’s @inside_saab.
